Summer holds a special place in our hearts. ‘Tis the season for road trips, cookouts, fun in the sun, and—best of all—a week of non-stop shark television. This year, Volkswagen of America is excited to announce its sponsorship of Discovery Channel’s 25th annual Shark Week, airing August 12th to 16th.

Not that Shark Week isn’t awesome enough already—clearly, it is—but we wanted to add to its awesomeness in a way that was uniquely Volkswagen. Our solution? A Beetle shark observation cage. (Seriously—how cool does that sound?) Volkswagen designers collaborated with diver and shark researcher Luke Tipple and a team of marine engineers and designers to build a fully functional cage shaped like the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. We don’t want to give away too many details because you’ll be able to see the entire design and build process in a three-part series on Discovery Channel airing August 12th, 13th, and 14th at 8pm EDT. Let’s just say that this one-of-a-kind, amphibious, shark-confronting Beetle is something you’ll want to see.

Discovery Channel has always made education and species conservation a key part of Shark Week coverage. This year, they’ll be airing tons of new content as well as “Shark Bites,” short vignettes that celebrate the greatest moments from Shark Weeks past, and “Sneak Peeks,” short segments that start airing the week of July 23rd. Speaking of sneak peeks, check out the video below for a first look at the Beetle shark observation cage.
